Portal Installation is easy

Think you can run a Java based portal server on a machine with less than 512 MB RAM? Think again! I realized this when I tried running IBM Websphere portal test environment on my home laptop with just 512 MB RAM. Obviously it didn't work but my desperation to write at least one JSR 168 portlet led me to download Apache Jetspeed2. I just wanted to write this note to make it known that Jetspeed2 installation is easier than it may appear. Before downloading and installing Jetspeed, I did a Google search to get some information (especially installation instructions). There was not much and the information I found talked about using maven etc. Any aspiring Jetspeed2 user should note that you don't need any of that. All you need to do is go to http://portals.apache.org/jetspeed-2/download.html and get Jetspeed2.0-derby-install.jar. Once downloaded, you simply need to go to http://portals.apache.org/jetspeed-2/getting-started-installer.html to install it. Of course this assumes that you will use the embedded database. You can explore complicated stuff at the website.

Before I could make much use of Jetspeed, my work laptop (with 2 GB RAM) arrived and I was all set to use IBM WebSphere portal. I will share my experience with WebSphere Portal installation in the next installment.
